Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn go head-to-head in in this tense yet tender two-hander shot almost entirely in a New York City taxi where confessions run up with the meter.

On arrival at JFK airport, Girlie (Johnson) hops into the back of a cab driven by the opinionated Clark (Penn). What transpires is an epic journey of armchair psychoanalysis spanning sex, relationships, gender, power and grief. When roadwork slows the trip to midtown Manhattan, Clark coaxes personal details from his cagey passenger by offering some of his own. The two take turns one-upping the other with all the skeletons in their respective closets, until Girlie drops the ultimate bomb. Produced by Johnson herself, Christy Hall’s feature directorial debut was originally conceived as a stage play but is vividly cinematic thanks to multi-Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Phedon Papamichael.

Every aspect of Daddio is designed to spark conversation. But it’s sweeter and more satisfying than you might expect
Peter Debruge, Variety
Sean Penn is at his absolute best here in a tremendously engaging performance as a salty working-class guy with an endless supply of opinions and ways of drawing out his passengers, while Dakota Johnson more than holds her own as a game passenger increasingly willing to share her problems with the amateur shrink behind the wheel
Todd McCarthy, Deadline
