Synopsis

An evocative hybrid doc exploring the life and teachings of Cree educator Wilfred Buck – a “star man” – whose luminous worldview blends Indigenous science, memory, and resilience.

This genre-defying documentary blends vérité, surrealist imagery, archive, and cinematic re-enactments to tell the story of the titular Buck, a charismatic Cree educator and star knowledge keeper from Northern Manitoba. Based on his memoir I Have Lived Four Lives, the film traverses Buck’s extraordinary path from displacement and addiction to reclaiming the ancestral science and cosmology of his people. As he shares knowledge across communities, he offers not only a map to the stars, but also a guide to healing. Intimate, raw, and ultimately uplifting, the CPH:DOX-selected Wilfred Buck is a moving meditation on Indigenous knowledge, intergenerational trauma, and the power of storytelling to light the way forward.

Limited seats are available for patrons requiring access for wheelchairs, low vision and hearing loop. Please contact our ticketing team directly on 1300 733 733 or tickets@sff.org.au to complete your booking.

An inspirational and contemplative documentary about one person’s lengthy journey to make others recognise the space where ancestral knowledge, personal hardship, and science intersect.
