Synopsis

An artist finally meets his girlfriend’s family in the latest witty and incisive drama by Korean indie auteur Hong Sang-soo (in water, SFF 2023). Berlin competition, 2025.

Director Hong’s filmic studies of Korean manners and mores are always insightful, but this, his 33rd feature in 30 years, is especially illuminating and rich in charming humour. Thirty-something Donghwa (in water’s Ha Seong-guk) has rejected his family’s wealth to live as a free-thinking poet. In the first of many intriguing revelations we discover that, in three years of dating, he has never met any of his girlfriend Junhee’s (Kang So-yi, A Traveller’s Needs) family members. That changes one sunny day, which rolls into a fateful night in the family’s impressive house in Incheon. There, drinks and discussion of life, love, money, and art flow, with the superb cast of Hong regulars bringing things memorably to the boil.
