The Legend of the Vagabond Queen of Lagos
Synopsis
The 2017 forced eviction of the Otodo Gbame shantytown in Lagos, Nigeria’s largest metropolitan city, forms the backdrop for this urgent and gripping tale. In this community built atop a lagoon, home to 30,000 displaced residents, single parent Jawu scrapes by, providing for her son by selling dead swallows streetside. When she stumbles onto millions in corrupt real estate cash, she is excited by the chance to run away to a better life. But then tragedy strikes the village in the form of a police raid gone awry, and Jawu yearns to take down the government official in charge. Part docufiction and part revenge thriller, the Agbajowo Collective’s story is a radical rallying cry for justice born of lived experience.
