Synopsis

The freshly tied knot between Lenny (Charles Grodin) and his bride Lila (Jeannie Berlin) quickly comes loose in Elaine May’s rapturous Oscar-nominated black comedy from 1972.

Following their joyously Jewish nuptials in New York, the newlyweds set off for their honeymoon in sunny Miami. But, before they can acclimatise, the nebbish groom starts to tire of his bride, and his attentions shift to glistening shiksa goddess Kelly, effortlessly embodied by ’70s golden girl Cybill Shepherd. While the hapless Lila languishes at the resort, Lenny pursues his new prize. Buoyed by career-defining performances from her stars, May brings to vivid life Neil Simon’s script (her sophomore film being the only one she didn’t write) with acerbic humour that builds to a cackle-inducing fever pitch. The Heartbreak Kid more than earns its spot on the AFI’s list of the 100 funniest American films ever made.

Limited seats are available for patrons requiring access for wheelchairs, low vision and hearing loop. Please contact our ticketing team directly on 1300 733 733 or tickets@sff.org.au to complete your booking.

The culminating work of Hollywood's Jewish new wave, as well as a hilarious riposte to [Mike Nichols'] The Graduate ... a masterpiece of social pathology.
