Slanted
Synopsis
Ever since she was little, Chinese American Joan Huang (Shirley Chen, Dìdi) has dreamed of being Prom Queen. The issue? She doesn’t see herself represented by the blonde, blue-eyed beauty standard of the former winners, plastered proudly on the walls of her high school. An ad for “racial transformation surgery” leads Joan to take the radical, irreversible step of turning herself white. Evoking Jordan Peele, Mean Girls and even a dash of The Substance (SFF 2024), Slanted announces a bright new talent in Wang (writer of the upcoming Crazy Rich Asians 2) who was inspired by her own upbringing as a Chinese Australian in suburban Sydney. It’s an acutely personal and universally profound dissection of the desire to belong.
