Synopsis

Debut Australian director Amy Wang’s twisted satire sees an aspiring prom queen undergo radical surgery to change her race. Winner of the SXSW Narrative Jury Award.

Ever since she was little, Chinese American Joan Huang (Shirley Chen, Dìdi) has dreamed of being Prom Queen. The issue? She doesn’t see herself represented by the blonde, blue-eyed beauty standard of the former winners, plastered proudly on the walls of her high school. An ad for “racial transformation surgery” leads Joan to take the radical, irreversible step of turning herself white. Evoking Jordan Peele, Mean Girls and even a dash of The Substance (SFF 2024), Slanted announces a bright new talent in Wang (writer of the upcoming Crazy Rich Asians 2) who was inspired by her own upbringing as a Chinese Australian in suburban Sydney. It’s an acutely personal and universally profound dissection of the desire to belong.

Limited seats are available for patrons requiring access for wheelchairs, low vision and hearing loop. Please contact our ticketing team directly on 1300 733 733 or tickets@sff.org.au to complete your booking.

Achieves a clever balance between being subversively reserved and loud when it needs to be.
