Synopsis

A young Bangladeshi woman must juggle sacrifice, responsibility, and resentment as the sole caregiver of her ailing mother in this deeply moving and assured debut. Toronto 2024.

Against the backdrop of present-day Dhaka’s financial strife, the strong-willed Saba (an astonishing Mehazabien Chowdhury) cares for her equally strong-willed paraplegic mother, Shirin (Rokeya Prachy). When Shirin suffers a heart attack, Saba must race to raise funds for the surgery her mother desperately needs. She takes a job waitressing at a seedy hookah lounge, bonding with her manager (Mostafa Monwar) over dreams of an alternative life. Shirin, meanwhile, stuck at home, feels increasingly trapped. Drawing on the director Maksud Hossain’s lived experience, Saba brings different experiences of disability into sharp focus through its deeply felt, class conscious portrait of several unforgettable characters.

Limited seats are available for patrons requiring access for wheelchairs, low vision and hearing loop. Please contact our ticketing team directly on 1300 733 733 or tickets@sff.org.au to complete your booking.

A tale of divided loyalties and desperate acts but one that is layered with precious reminders of life’s simple pleasures.
