Saba
Synopsis
Against the backdrop of present-day Dhaka’s financial strife, the strong-willed Saba (an astonishing Mehazabien Chowdhury) cares for her equally strong-willed paraplegic mother, Shirin (Rokeya Prachy). When Shirin suffers a heart attack, Saba must race to raise funds for the surgery her mother desperately needs. She takes a job waitressing at a seedy hookah lounge, bonding with her manager (Mostafa Monwar) over dreams of an alternative life. Shirin, meanwhile, stuck at home, feels increasingly trapped. Drawing on the director Maksud Hossain’s lived experience, Saba brings different experiences of disability into sharp focus through its deeply felt, class conscious portrait of several unforgettable characters.
