RomerÍa
Synopsis
It’s 2004 and orphaned teenager Marina (Llúcia Garcia) discovers that, in order to secure a scholarship, she needs the signature of the paternal grandparents she’s never met. And so she travels to Vigo, on the Spanish Atlantic Coast, where she encounters a retinue of boisterous, eccentric relatives, also previously unknown to her. Marina’s grandmother, though in seemingly good health, claims to be ready for death, while her grandfather rules the roost and will countenance no challenge to his authority.
Through interactions with these family members, and gleaned bits of information, Marina begins to gradually unravel the secret history of her parents’ tempestuous love story. Discovering that virtually everything she knew about her parents was wrong, Marina imagines a shimmering, unforgettable alternate history. As with Alcarràs and her first film, Summer 1993, Simón finds in her own life story fertile ground for extraordinary cinema – here on a more expansive and impressive scale than ever.
