Synopsis

Hypnotic scenes from a horrific summer wildfire season in Galicia become a haunting, urgent illustration of the interdependency between humans and animals. Berlinale 2025.

Robin Petré (From the Wild Sea, SFF 2021) transports viewers to the hills of Southern Galicia, home to the largest number of wild horses in Europe. These horses play a crucial role in reducing the impact of wildfires, through eating and trampling flammable plants – but their numbers are dwindling. When the hottest summer on record arrives, unprecedented fires rage. Petré gives equal attention to the region’s noble beasts as to the residents, including a horse veterinarian, a plucky, young, would-be cowboy, and a firefighter on the disaster’s frontlines. Moving between the anthropic and animal perspectives, the profound but fragile balance that binds us with the land is made powerfully tangible.

Limited seats are available for patrons requiring access for wheelchairs, low vision and hearing loop. Please contact our ticketing team directly on 1300 733 733 or tickets@sff.org.au to complete your booking.

That rare film which offers a roadmap to our survival but also finds a way to burrow itself deep into the crevices of our subconscious, changing the way we do things in our daily lives.
