Mirrors No. 3
Synopsis
Petzold regular Paula Beer plays Laura, a piano student from Berlin who takes a trip with her musician boyfriend, Jakob, to the countryside. A devastating car crash kills Jakob while Paula, miraculously, is largely unharmed. Taken in temporarily by Betty (Barbara Auer, Transit, SFF 2018), a witness to the accident who lives nearby, Laura begins to recover from the trauma. As time passes, the two women settle into a comfortable routine, and Laura expresses little will to return to her life in Berlin – much to Betty’s delight.
When Betty’s husband Richard and son Max (Matthias Brandt and Enno Trebs, both in Afire) arrive on the scene following an absence, they too support Laura in her recovery and a form of filial bliss sets in. But as time passes, there are signals that all is not well, and Laura begins to question the family’s motivations. Named for the third movement of a suite for solo piano composed by Maurice Ravel, Mirrors No. 3 is a beguiling exploration of loss, healing and how to confront the past to move forward, told in Petzold’s signature elegant style.
