Synopsis

Celebrated TV writer-producer Alex Russell (The Bear, Beef) makes a triumphant leap to the big screen with this tense psychodrama about a fan’s obsession with a pop star.

On the job at an L.A. indie apparel store, Matt (Théodore Pellerin, Beau Is Afraid) catches the attention of rising star Oliver (Saltburn’s Archie Madekwe) when he blasts a Nile Rodgers deep cut. An oblivious Oliver thinks he’s stumbled upon a kindred spirit: how could he know that Matt is in fact playing a Ripley-esque long game? Oliver invites him to his swanky Hollywood Hills house and asks him to document his creative journey – so enabling Matt's (para)social climbing. Lurker incisively examines themes of loneliness and obsession in the digital age, with riveting, empathetic performances from its two leads, who mine the ambiguity of the central relationship for humour and horror, often in the same scene.

Limited seats are available for patrons requiring access for wheelchairs, low vision and hearing loop. Please contact our ticketing team directly on 1300 733 733 or tickets@sff.org.au to complete your booking.

Alex Russell’s filmmaking debut somehow managed to take a well-worn subject – the disparity of power between the famous and the famous-adjacent – and make it feel fresh, dangerous and so cringe-comedic that you wanted to cover your eyes.
