Synopsis

In this awe-inspiring and visually rich documentary, scientists race to explore the ocean floor – one of Earth’s last frontiers – before deep sea-mining destroys it forever.

This CPH:DOX 2025 selection by Eleanor Mortimer unites playfulness and urgency in a story of oceanic discovery – a venture as strange and wondrous as it is important. Here, scientists aren’t confined to labs, but are explorers in an alien realm less charted than the moon, who name sea creatures with endearing spontaneity – from the “headless chicken monster” to the “mystery blob”. But beneath their humour is a sobering truth: deep-sea mining threatens to erase knowledge untouched for millions of years. This film captures unfathomable beauty while revealing deep-sea science as intertwined with politics and environmental stewardship. It’s a love letter to the unknown and a plea for the preservation of this final earthly frontier.

Limited seats are available for patrons requiring access for wheelchairs, low vision and hearing loop. Please contact our ticketing team directly on 1300 733 733 or tickets@sff.org.au to complete your booking.

A film that functions both as awestruck spectacle and anxious warning… A warm, approachable entry in the growing eco-documentary subgenre that should net considerable interest on the strength of its plaintive environmental message and its frequently dazzling imagery.
