Ciao Bambino
Synopsis
Winner of Best First Film prizes at Rome and Tallinn Black Nights festivals, Edgardo Pistone’s Ciao Bambino is a both raw and poetic debut. Moodily photographed in monochrome, it tells the story of Attilio, a young man taking his first steps in the Naples underworld while dealing with his father’s criminal legacy. Attilio’s increasingly dangerous relationship with Anastasia, an Ukrainian sex worker who is attempting to bring her family to safety, is depicted with tenderness and deftly avoids sentimentality. First-time feature actors Marco Adamo and Anastasia Kaletchuk deliver beautifully natural performances in an urgent contemporary drama that invokes the spirit of Federico Fellini’s I Vitelloni (1953) and Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Accattone (1961).
