Synopsis

Fun-loving André delayed getting a colonoscopy only to discover that he’s dying. In this Sundance Audience Award-winner, join André on his hilarious and heartfelt journey to the end.

André Ricciardi is a truly madcap and original character. He talks a mile-a-minute and collects odd things, including trousers once worn by Kim Kardashian (he had hoped to one day to clone her). After a stage 4 cancer diagnosis, he makes the unexpected decision to film his final days, while ensuring that they’re fun and ridiculous. We meet his wife – his opposite in every way – along with his family and best friend, who are all grappling with what lies ahead. With a whimsical and retro style, director Tony Benna has crafted a film that is deeply moving and surprisingly funny. With the brilliant André at its heart, this is an ode to one man’s life and loves, and showcases the courage it takes to exit laughing.

Limited seats are available for patrons requiring access for wheelchairs, low vision and hearing loop. Please contact our ticketing team directly on 1300 733 733 or tickets@sff.org.au to complete your booking.

André Is an Idiot is a much lighter experience than its Abstract might suggest, but its buoyancy in the face of oblivion is the source of its power. Most of us could never hope to be as smart as Ricciardi was, but the movie he’s left behind does everything in its power to ensure that we’re not as dumb as he was either.
