Synopsis

It’s father against son and both against the Swiss Alps in this chilly, Ruben Östlund-esque social drama, winner of the Europa Cinemas Label Award at Venice 2024.

Familial tensions simmer in the icy alpine setting of Alpha., with writer-director Jan-Willem van Ewijk observing the power dynamic between a charismatic father and his introverted son – played, in a brilliant casting move, by a real-life father-son duo – with aptly layered humour. Rein moves to the Alps following his mother’s death, seeking to immerse himself in nature and teach snowboarding – plans that are disrupted by a visit from his domineering father, Gijs. Rein’s new friends adore Gijs, stirring up dormant jealousies in the younger man with testosterone-fuelled consequences. But the pristine cinematography capturing the sublime and unforgiving nature of the slopes reveals that the mountains have no king.

Limited seats are available for patrons requiring access for wheelchairs, low vision and hearing loop. Please contact our ticketing team directly on 1300 733 733 or tickets@sff.org.au to complete your booking.

Those mountains are the most enthralling of backdrops, the father-son dynamic is subtly and economically drawn, and the pervasive mood of encroaching discomfort is stylishly rendered.
