Alpha.
Synopsis
Familial tensions simmer in the icy alpine setting of Alpha., with writer-director Jan-Willem van Ewijk observing the power dynamic between a charismatic father and his introverted son – played, in a brilliant casting move, by a real-life father-son duo – with aptly layered humour. Rein moves to the Alps following his mother’s death, seeking to immerse himself in nature and teach snowboarding – plans that are disrupted by a visit from his domineering father, Gijs. Rein’s new friends adore Gijs, stirring up dormant jealousies in the younger man with testosterone-fuelled consequences. But the pristine cinematography capturing the sublime and unforgiving nature of the slopes reveals that the mountains have no king.
