Synopsis

When a playboy’s (Walter Matthau) trust fund runs dry, he fixes his gaze on the fortune of a dotty botanist played by Elaine May herself, in her zesty, hysterical debut.

The film opens with an EKG machine beeping ominously as men in white coats examine a subject off-screen. In a twist that’s reminiscent of early Nichols and May gags, the men are revealed to be mechanics. They present Matthau’s Henry with a prognosis for his racy red Ferrari 275 GTB: terminal. His lavish lifestyle is about to go the same way, leaving a trail of bounced cheques in its wake. Acting on diabolical advice, Henry plots to marry the wealthiest woman around, murder her and snag the inheritance. Enter hijinks, stage right. The first film written, directed and starring a woman, A New Leaf is a showcase for May’s singular comedic genius and, per The New Yorker, “one of the best romantic comedies ever made.”

Limited seats are available for patrons requiring access for wheelchairs, low vision and hearing loop. Please contact our ticketing team directly on 1300 733 733 or tickets@sff.org.au to complete your booking.

Brilliantly staged and performed… illustrates how fluidly May fuses verbal and physical comedy.
