Sound of Falling
The history of a tumultuous nation, and the lives and struggles of women within it, spans from 1940s Germany to modern times in Mascha Schilinski’s singular film. Alma (1900s), Erika (1940s), Angelika (1980s), and Lenka (now) hold secrets that only the walls of the farmhouse they all lived in know. They struggle for their own sense of self in a rural area of a country whose identity has been so tied to violence, with its tendrils felt all the way to their domestic lives. Extraordinary cinematography by Fabian Gamper make this a truly cinematic work of poetry, weaving a visual tapestry like nothing else you’ll see in the cinema this year.
