A Brazilian single mother and tollbooth attendant team with local criminals to fund gay conversion therapy for her teenage son, in this tensely unpredictable and slyly satirical crime drama

The mists of Cubatão provides an aptly murky backdrop for this morally complex tale by Brazilian filmmaker Carolina Markowicz (Charcoal). Maeve Jinkings (Aquarius, SFF 2016) is magnetic as Suellen, a motorway tollbooth attendant worried about what the future holds for her openly gay son Tiquinho (charismatic newcomer Kauan Alvarenga). Suellen thinks conversion therapy might be the answer, but paying for it on her meagre wages is impossible. What follows reveals a country in a rapid state of social change, and Markowicz skilfully ratchets up the tension as Suellen becomes an accomplice to highway robbery and events spin out of her control.

Limited seats are available for patrons requiring access for wheelchairs, low vision and hearing loop. Please contact our ticketing team directly on 1300 733 733 or tickets@sff.org.au to complete your booking.
Serious-minded but never sombre, Toll has a welcome strain of absurdist humour, not least in the therapy sessions of poker-faced, Jesus-lookalike Pastor Isaac

At the heart of it is the complex relationship between mother and son – one which is clearly full of love, although neither of them is able to articulate that very well
