Bold and dazzling, Pietro Marcello’s multi award winning drama set in pre-war Italy follows a sailor who falls in love with a wealthy, young woman and seeks to climb up the societal ladder in the face of hypocrisy, ideology and what it means to be an individual.
Set in picturesque pre-war Naples, this passionate and enthralling story (based on a Jack London novel) follows Martin Eden (Luca Marinelli, The Old Guard) a sailor who falls in love with the wealthy and sophisticated Elena, whose brother he has rescued from a dock fight. Ignoring her snobby relatives, the two plan to marry, but first Martin wants to become a writer, one respected among society for his social and political views.
As he develops and intensely pursues his new-found obsessions, both literary and social, Martin starts to betray those around him, denies his class consciousness, and rejects his humble origins, which further add to his inner turmoil.
With a clever combination of archival footage and camerawork, director Pietro Marcello (The Mouth of the Wolf) spins an epic story against a historical backdrop of shifting values that are as universal as they are timeless and ultimately question what it is to be an individual.
