Viggo Mortensen (Green Book, The Lord of The Rings Trilogy) directs and co-stars in this touching tale of a weary son’s attempts to reconcile with his formidable father, Willis (a fiery Lance Henriksen, Aliens).

Beautifully alternating between past and present, this engaging and thought-provoking drama follows John as a boy, forced by his father into regular tests of masculinity, and John as an adult living happily as a married gay man. It’s clear that John has long been the target of his father’s frustrations. When Willis, in the first stages of mental decline descends back into John’s life, his usual harshness and bitter prejudices flow unchecked. As a son still bound by duty, John must care for the man who hurts him the most.

Henriksen delivers a towering performance as a man rigid with a rage he can barely understand, and Laura Linney (Ozark) is terrific as John’s anxious sister, Sarah. Using sophisticated visual and aural techniques to take us inside the experiences of both father and son, ultimately this story is a crackling revelation into the complexities and responsibilities that come with family.
