Julian Schnabel’s At Eternity’s Gate is a journey inside the world and mind of a person who, despite skepticism, ridicule and illness, created some of the world’s most beloved and stunning works of art.

NOMINATED: BEST ACTOR, ACADEMY AWARDS 2019; BEST ACTOR, GOLDEN GLOBES 2019

WINNER: GREEN DROP AWARD, VENICE FILM FESTIVAL 2018

Academy heavy weights, director Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) and actor Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project, The Grand Budapest Hotel) come together to present an almost surreal view of the final months in the life of the extraordinarily talented yet tormented artist Vincent Van Gogh (Dafoe). The film perfectly captures the needy complexities of this beleaguered genius, the tireless support of his brother (Rupert Friend), and his relationship with fellow artist Gaugin (a stellar Oscar Isaac, X-Men). Schnabel's visually stunning, multi-faceted story, based on Van Gogh's letters, demonstrates just how tough it can be for anyone who unwittingly stands out while trying hard to blend in.

There have been plenty of films about the tortured Dutch artist, but none as evocative and affecting as Julian Schnabel’s latest, starring Willem Dafoe. –Lily Gavin, Rolling Stone
