This intimate story is also a love letter from a young mother (Syrian filmmaker Waad al-Kateab) to her daughter Sama, told through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth, all while conflict rises around her.
Taking up the camera in 2012 to document the protests of her fellow students against President Assad, Waad kept filming as her beloved city fell under siege. As the camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival we also see Waad wrestle with an impossible choice– whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much. Ultimately this documentary is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war and hope, a promise of better times to be protected at any cost.
