This sumptuous historical drama is based on the true story of Black composer Joseph Bologne (Kelvin Harrison Jr., Waves, Elvis) whose musical mastery led to his rise in the 18th century French court.
Mozart is performing a concert when he is suddenly interrupted by a confident young man who asks to join on violin – and completely outshines him. The man is Joseph Bologne, the illegitimate son of an African slave and French plantation owner who makes his way to the upper echelons of French society, counting Marie Antoinette as a friend. As he enters a passionate romance with the married Marie-Josephine (Samara Weaving) and confronts the racism underlying the facade of civility, Bologne is forced to reassert his independence. Beautifully staged by director Stephen Williams (
Lost,
Watchmen) and with a compelling performance by ever-impressive Harrison,
Chevalier is both provocative romantic drama and historical redress.
