WINNER: ACADEMY AWARDS, BEST FOREIGN FILM 2021
Martin (Mikkelsen) and his three friends are disillusioned schoolteachers who are largely unenthusiastic about both their professional and personal lives. When they come across a theory that constant modest inebriation could lead to an open mind, diminished anxiety and increased creativity, they decide to give it a shot.
Flasks at the ready, the friends go about their school days, slightly loaded, and find the initial results highly encouraging. They lead their classes with new vigour and the students are far more engaged. But when they decide to expand their experiment, things get a bit more complicated. Director Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt; The Commune, SFF 2016; Festen; Kursk, SFF 2019) and Mikkelsen are both on top form in this rousing and provocative film.
Thomas Vinterberg is one of Denmark's most important, award-winning, and internationally celebrated directors. His 1998 breakthrough Festen was the world’s first Dogme 95 film and won the Cannes Jury Prize. His other films include Kursk (SFF 2019); The Commune (SFF 2016), Far From the Madding Crowd (SFF 2015) and The Hunt (2012), which earned Mads Mikkelsen the Best Actor Award at Cannes.
