An inspiring documentary about a Northern Ireland primary school teacher who changes the lives of his pupils through philosophy. From the team behind School Life (SFF 2017).
Kevin McArevey is headteacher at the Holy Cross Boys’ school in Ardoyne, north Belfast, a community much impacted by Northern Ireland’s Troubles. He’s also a martial arts and Elvis aficionado who loves classical philosophy. By introducing his pupils to new ways of thinking using the ideas of Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle, McArevey hopes to change their behaviour and approach to conflict. Directors Neasa Ní Chianáin and Declan McGrath’s engagingly optimistic documentary won a Special Jury Award at Thessaloniki Documentary Festival this year, with the jury commenting that the award goes to “a film that can only give us hope in future generations and their capacity to make the world a better place.”
The school is no more dysfunctional than any other institution and a lot more intelligent and self-questioning than many. A very engaging film.
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
Encouraging children to avoid conflict has a particular relevance in Belfast, of course, but I’d be happy to see McArevey’s methods used in schools everywhere.
Edward Porter, Sunday Times
By the time McArevey drives home from work to the sounds of Presley’s ‘If I Can Dream’ there is unlikely to be a dry eye in the house.
Allan Hunter, Screen International
