Goran Stolevski’s astonishing debut, starring Noomi Rapace, is a visually spectacular supernatural tale about a young shape-shifting witch trying to understand what it means to be human.
In a 19th
century Macedonian village, a desperate mother is willing to do anything to protect her infant daughter Nevena. She makes a deal with Old Maid Maria – the “Wolf-Eateress” – a witch who kidnaps children and drinks the blood of animals. In return for her daughter’s life, she agrees to hand her over on her 16th
birthday. Then she hides Nevena in a cave, far away from all human interaction. But Old Maid Maria is not to be deterred and claims her prize all the same, taking the girl and imbuing her with the ability to shift shape. Nevena takes on the forms of several villagers, of different genders and ages. Having been isolated from society for all her years, Nevena begins to experience for the first time what it is to be human, eagerly absorbing all around her, both the pleasurable and the painful. Stolevski seamlessly melds conventions of the horror film with a poetic aesthetic contemplating the very nature of human existence, resulting in a mesmerising, indelible film.
