After covering up the murder of their schoolmate, two cousins are haunted by the consequences decades later in this slow-burning thriller from First Nations filmmaker Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr. Sundance 2021.
Blood is thicker than water in Corbine's gritty noir feature debut. Cousins Makwa and Ted-O are only boys when they are forced to cover up the murder of their classmate. Now adults, Makwa (Michael Greyeyes, Woman Walks Ahead; True Detective) goes by Michael at his high-paying office job, and Ted-O (Chaske Spencer, Winter in the Blood) is re-entering the world after another stint in prison. The body of their peer remains buried deep in decades past. But not for long. In this tense and skilful murder mystery, themes of assimilation, intergenerational trauma and ghosts from the past simmer beneath the surface of a tale of blood-soaked boyhood – with an unmistakably Native heart.
So many movies rush to assign reductive labels of good and evil, whereas Wild Indian wants to understand all the competing pressures on its protagonist.

Guilt and moral ambiguity ripple through Wild Indian, the quietly stunning feature debut from writer-director Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr.
