What Keeps You Alive
The latest film by multitalented genre maven Colin Minihan (Grave Encounters, 2011) takes familiar horror-thriller ingredients and forges them into a story that upends convention and expectation. There’s the happy couple skipping off for a romantic weekend in the wilderness. Then there’s the old family cabin with its history and secrets. And of course the neighbours across the lake seem to know…something. Minihan’s cleverly crafted screenplay then rearranges everything into a pulse-pounding tale in which untamed landscape and raw emotion become inextricably linked. This compelling study in primal fear features knockout central performances by Hannah Emily Anderson and Brittany Allen.
A thriller with a truly clever turn in that it starts feeling like it’s taking the audience in one direction and then takes a sharp right angle into something else entirely. – Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com
There are some inspired decisions by both Minihan and his cast that help elevate his latest and transform the heady thriller into an experience that gleefully pulls the rug out from beneath you time and time again. – Heather Wixson, Daily Dead
