Spellbinding, witty and highly original, Agnès Varda’s final film, which premiered just a month before she died, looks back at her remarkable life and exceptional career.

A fitting tribute to Varda's innovative and genre-defying approach, Varda by Agnès combines clips from her films and dramatised reconstructions, along with Varda's own priceless musings. Since her debut feature in 1961 (La Point Courte, screening in the Festival's Viva Varda retrospective on 12 June) the auteur has crafted singular narrative films and documentaries (including the Oscar-nominated Faces Places in 2017). Her legacy is profound and far-reaching. While there's sadness at her loss to the living world, it's an absolute pleasure to spend time with this eternally playful filmmaker as she yet again blurs the line between fact and fiction – keeping audiences on their cinematic toes.

In my films, I always wanted to make people see deeply. I don’t want to show things, but to give people the desire to see.
Agnès Varda
Every single one of her remarkable handmade pictures, so beautifully balanced between documentary and fiction, is like no one else’s - every image, every cut … What a body of work she left behind: movies big and small, playful and tough, generous and solitary, lyrical and unflinching … and alive.
Martin Scorsese
