UK Director Mark Cousins (The Story of Film: An Odyssey) continues his influential voyage through the splendour of cinema, with his Cannes-selected exploration into the state of moviemaking in the last decade.
The films from 2010 to 2021 that Cousins references range from Joker to Frozen to Cemetery of Splendour (SFF 2015), not to mention Parasite (SFF 2019), The Farewell and Black Panther. With his distinctive voice, compelling narration and a myriad of clips, Cousins explores cinema around the world. He seeks out films and filmmakers traditionally sidelined, as well as films that have broken or stretched the rules; Gangs of Wasseypur (SFF 2012), On Body and Soul (SFF 2017) and Booksmart (SFF 2019), and more. Cousins delves into every realm of cinema, including acting (The Irishman), horror (The Babadook, SFF 2019) and documentary (The Act of Killing, SFF 2013). And finally, he takes the time to contemplate technology (from films shot on iPhones to YouTube), and what comes next in the streaming age.
Colossally well-informed, bracingly internationalist and genuinely educational.
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
When movies truly transport us, they’re a kind of collective dreaming, an experience we’ve been denied for more than year. Cousins offers poignant glimpses of empty theatres, and self-videos he collected during the pandemic of people shutting their eyes to sleep, to dream. His optimism regarding human connection via movie love prevails.
Sheri Linden, The Hollywood Reporter
