A divorced food critic and a free-spirited photographer stroll down the road to possible romance in Zhang Lu’s charming slice-of-life dramedy. Berlinale 2023.
Beijing’s White Pagoda has such an unusual design that it never seems to cast a shadow. Local legend says the temple’s shade can only be found in far-away Tibet. The 13th century landmark is a constant presence in the tale of Gu Wentong, a middle-aged father and modestly successful food writer. Rather like the tower, Gu doesn’t seem to be casting a shadow as he drifts along invisibly in life. Relaxed pacing and wonderfully natural dialogue cast a warm glow as Gu begins to think about his difficult past and contemplate a possible future with Ouyang, a sparky young photographer with a zest for life. Novelist turned filmmaker Zhang Lu (
Love And… SFF 2016) has created an enchanting and tender film to savour.
