This poetic portrait of a man and his increasingly rare lifestyle in remote Kentucky is at once hauntingly beautiful and achingly sad. Selected for Cannes 2020.
Poet and father Brian Ritchie calls himself ‘the last hillbilly'. He lives in the Kentucky hills, long ravaged by coalmining with just a few lingering pockets of woodland. Ritchie is keen to challenge the ‘hillbilly' stereotype – poor, uneducated, racist Trump supporters. It's a term stuck in the past, but as Ritchie wryly says, "It's all true." Evocative images reminiscent of American photographers like William Eggleston, and striking sequences (shot in 1:33 ratio) such as a night-time bonfire are accompanied by Ritchie's contemplative voice-over and Jay Gambit's inventive score. French directors Bouzgarrou and Jenkoe (also cinematographer) won Torino Film Festival's main documentary prize for this creative work.
A poetic look at the demise of white rural America.
Kaleem Aftab, Variety
The film’s depiction of its subjects achieves a sense of empathetic closeness.
