The Happiest Man In The World

Directed by Teona Strugar Mitevska
2022
North Macedonia
95 minutes

A speed-dating day in Sarajevo sparks this bold drama about the trauma of war and the power of love, from Teona Strugar Mitevska (God Exists, Her Name is Petrunya, SFF 2019). Venice (Horizons) 2022.
The ironic title of Mitevska’s sixth feature refers to Zoran, a downcast bank employee who attends a matchmaking day for Sarajevo singles. His assigned partner for the event is Asja, a successful lawyer. But Zoran is not seeking romance. He has come here to confess to Asja that they share a dark connection – dating back to 1993 during the Bosnian War. Based on the amazing true story of co-writer Elma Tataragic, this incisive drama opens the emotional wounds of both victim and perpetrator. As their souls are laid bare they’re surrounded by amusing banter and fun games played by other singles seeking a new start in life and love.
Quite apart from what the film reveals about the legacy of the ’90s war in the former Yugoslavia, it is a dramatically potent, expertly staged piece that grips from the start.
Jonathan Romney, Screen International
The Happiest Man in the World is an intelligently written conceit that is both bold and different, that shows what the traumas of war can do.
Kristy Strouse, Film Inquiry
