A mesmerising, lyrical portrait of life in a rural Mexican village from the director of Cannes Un Certain Regard winner, Prayers for the Stolen (SFF 2021). Berlinale 2023 winner.
Director Tatiana Huezo filmed the tiny village of El Eco (a few hours from Mexico City) for 18 months, capturing the shift of seasons, from pouring rain to sunshine. She observed the lives of its residents, focussing on perpetually busy mothers, a frequently absent father, abundant children, a frail grandmother. Beautifully poetic scenes give audiences a warm glimpse into daily life: a young girl caring for her elderly relative or playing school with her dolls, labouring in the fields, or listening to folk stories. Huezo records the pattern of the villagers’ lives, outwardly static – but change is on the way. Winner of the Documentary Award and Encounters Award for Best Director at Berlinale 2023.
