The fascinating story of the production and aftermath of the controversial 1983 made-for-TV movie, The Day After – which imagined the impact of a nuclear attack on the USA.
In November 1983, America's ABC broadcast The Day After and over 100 million people tuned in. At the time, anxiety about USA-USSR tensions and nuclear annihilation was at an all-time high. The movie was a fictional account of the effects of a nuclear war. The action centred on the town of Lawrence, Kansas, before, during and after the bombing. The ‘television event' generated ripples that reached President Ronald Reagan – potentially changing the course of global politics. Jeff Daniels interviews the film's director Nicholas Meyer, screenwriter Edward Hume, TV execs and the residents of Lawrence. He combines their commentary with production and news footage to trace the astonishing story of this impactful film.

Jeff Daniels, born and raised in New York, has been based in Melbourne for more than 20 years. His debut film 10 Conditions of Love (2009) made international headlines for highlighting the plight of China's Uyghur community. Other films: Mother with a Gun (2016) and Fair Game (2017).
Television Event hails The Day After as the rare case of a TV network not just pushing the envelope but bursting it, making the rare TV-movie that shook people to their souls.
Owen Gleiberman, Variety
In 1983, most Americans expected a nuclear war to take place within the next 10 years. Daniels' sharp film never loses sight of that sense of urgency.
