Hope, happiness and the origin story: the early days of Sesame Street, packed with clips, outtakes and interviews with the groundbreaking creative team. Sundance 2021.
The idea behind the beloved TV series came from the show's visionary creator Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett in the late 1960s. Joan hired writer-producer Jon Stone and legendary puppeteer Jim Henson to help craft a program using television to teach children. Working with education experts, they created a show that taught ABCs and 123s alongside honest life lessons. With its beloved Muppet characters, Sesame Street became a cultural phenomenon that, more than 50 years later, still screens around the world. Packed with funny behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with cast and crew, Marilyn Agrelo's (Mad Hot Ballroom, SFF 2005) documentary is an insightful and boisterous delight.
Street Gang reveals both the enduring resonance and infectious energy of that founding philosophy, one that expanded the imagination of entertainment’s scope, content and capacity for public service, especially in the face of under-valued, inequitable public education.
Adrian Horton, The Guardian
Street Gang highlights the enormity of what can be accomplished when many different sectors and interests come together with the success and well-being of children as their focus.
