In 1880s Chile, a 13-year-old Indigenous girl seeks supernatural retribution for the murder of her father at the hands of German settlers in this tale of grief and resistance. Sundance 2023.
Director Christopher Murray drew inspiration from a real-life witchcraft trial in his atmospheric decolonial folk horror, set on Chiloé Island. Rosa (a luminous Valentina Véliz Caileo) is a Huilliche girl and Christian convert who works as a servant for a pious German farmer (Sebastian Hülk). When the farmer’s sheep are all mysteriously killed, he blames witchcraft and takes out his rage on Rosa’s father (Francisco Nuñez). Abandoned by the authorities, the stricken girl turns to a gruff Indigenous fisherman and mystic (Daniel Antivilo) for help finding justice. Soon Rosa is pulled into the uncanny world of those who fiercely protect the island with spirit powers.
