Sea of Shadows
The vaquita is found only in the Sea of Cortez, an extraordinarily biodiverse environment that Jacques Cousteau called “the aquarium of the planet”. The region is also home to the totoaba, a fish whose swim bladder is a highly prized Chinese delicacy. Fishermen using illegal gill nets trap totoaba (aka the ‘cocaine of the sea') for the black market – vaquita are just collateral damage. It's a multi-million-dollar business involving Mexican drug cartels and Chinese smugglers. Against these odds, Sea Shepherd activists, the military, scientists and others are battling to save this endangered creature. Director Richard Ladkani (The Ivory Game) documents their urgent undertakings in this heartrending eco-thriller.
