Teenager Gemma lives in the tough Scottish neighbourhood of Jerviston, Motherwell, where “you either get knocked up or locked up,” in her words. Co-directors Ellen Fiske and Ellinor Hallin have crafted an amazingly intimate and at times heartbreaking chronicle of Gemma’s life, in a place blighted by broken promises since the steelworks closed almost 40 years ago. Violence and disappointment are the constants of life here. Times may be tough, but Gemma’s a “scheme bird,” with courage, determination and personal strength that’s memorably captured in this fascinating, devastating documentary.
