Three mystical mercenaries take on earthly and other-worldly enemies in Jean Luc Herbulot’s dazzling action-crime-horror-western-fantasy. Best Director, Fantastic Fest 2021.
We’ve never seen a genre hybrid like this totally crazy, totally exciting Senegalese production dreamt up by Congolese writer-director Jean Luc Herbulot (Dealer, 2014). The Bangui Hyenas are legendary mercenaries rumoured to also be sorcerers. It’s 2003, and the Hyenas are transporting a drug boss and his gold from the coup in Guinea-Bissau to Dakar. When the getaway plane runs out of gas the trio and their cash cow wind up in in the Sine-Saloum delta, where “myths and cursed kings” live. That’s just for starters in a tale involving magic, machine guns, monsters, mind control and unholy alliances with unspeakable forces. And sign language. Super style, super imagination, fantastic performances.
Strap in; Jean Luc Herbulot's Saloum is nothing less than 84 minutes of pure African genre mayhem, with little interest in pausing long enough for you to catch your breath.
Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Film International
Spirituality, morality, mythology, and mysticism get thrown into a gritty crime thriller blender, culminating in a refreshingly unique type of genre-bender.
Meagan Navarro, Bloody Disgusting
Freely mixes and marries the cinematic languages of spaghetti Westerns, samurai dramas and classic monster movies to tell an exciting and distinctly African story.
