Based on true events. An inspirational teacher (Eugenio Derbez, CODA) takes a radical approach when he arrives at a poor-performing school in Mexico, in this 2023 Sundance Audience award winner.
It’s no wonder that the students of the school in Matamoros are not thriving. In the northeastern Mexican border town, the children are faced with random violence, poverty, and expectations that they take on adult responsibilities. And the school itself is terribly neglected; plundered by unscrupulous officials. Enter Sergio Juarez (Derbez), the new teacher who uses innovative methods to engage the troubled children, and finds clever methods to navigate a malevolent bureaucracy. Along the way, he finds that some of the children have extraordinary talents, particularly Paloma (Jennifer Trejo) who dreams of becoming an aerospace engineer. Finely balancing the tragedies inevitable in these circumstances with an infectious sense of optimism, Radical is an incredible tale of possibility and hope.
Christopher Zalla’s resolute crowdpleaser Radical is a heart-tugger in the mold of such old-school “inspiring teacher changes everything” tales as To Sir With Love, Dead Poets Society … broad audience appeal — watch it without tissues at your own risk — and hits all the expected notes.
