Carlota Pereda’s much talked-about Sundance hit is a riveting social horror film about trauma and revenge, with a magnificent lead performance by Laura Galán.
Sara is the sensitive daughter of a butcher in a hot and dusty Spanish village near the Portuguese border. The local mean girls don’t call her Sara. To them she’s ‘Fatty’, ‘Weirdo’ or ‘Piggy’. After humiliating Sara at the public pool, three of her tormentors are abducted by a stranger. Sara has seen everything and should also be a victim. But she has been spared by the kidnapper, who even shows her a strange form of kindness. Will Sara report what she’s witnessed? Or will silence be her revenge on those who’ve made her life a misery? Writer-director Pereda has expanded her 2018 Goya-winning short into a bloody, brutal and deeply affecting feature about the devastating consequences of bullying and the need for love.
Piggy sits at an unexpected intersection of artistic sensibilities, first recalling Catherine Breillat, then Brian DePalma, before taking a deep, bloody plunge into grindhouse.
Guy Lodge Variety
Laura Galán in the role of the tormented youngster easily gives one of the year’s most memorable performances.
Tomris Laffly, Harper’s Bazaar
This disturbing psychological drama spirals into blood-drenched horror, its wild genre extremities never disguising the feeling that its social commentary on violence and abuse comes from a very real and personal place.
David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
