Bored couple Bruno and Laura try to save their marriage at a new-age retreat in this hilarious, one-of-a-kind Kiwi comedy spoken in gibberish and subtitled in English.
The comic device at the heart of the film devised by Jackie van Beek (
The Breaker Upperers, SFF 2018) and director Armağan Ballantyne (
The Strength of Water) is as unique as it is uproariously hilarious. Actors were given basic pointers before being allowed to run verbally amok and deliver their lines in improvised gibberish. Post-filming, enter British comedian Julia Davis, to supply the funniest and most deliriously rude subtitles you could ever hope to read while falling off the chair laughing. There’s a beautiful heart here as well. Damon Herriman and van Beek are perfect as the troubled couple, and Jemaine Clement is hysterical as the smooth, gibberish-spouting sex guru Bjorg at his “disco of sensations”.
