A distinctively creative portrait of the father of video art, the trailblazing Korea-born Nam June Paik, with actor Steven Yeun (Minari, SFF 2021) reading Paik’s own words.
Nam June Paik was studying classical music in Germany when his exposure to the work of avant-garde composer John Cage changed the direction of his life. He joined the experimental art group, Fluxus, and continuously extended the boundaries of performance and art. Moving to New York in the late 1960s, he credits his ‘non-success’ with giving him the opportunity to continue experimenting with performance (including topless cello playing), television and video art. Amanda Kim’s debut documentary celebrates the work of this most playful, forward-looking (he coined the term ‘electronic superhighway’) and highly inventive artist.
