Werner Herzog’s fascinating conversations with the last leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, illuminate a political legacy that still resonates today.

During Gorbachev's tenure the Cold War ended, Eastern Bloc countries gained their independence, the Berlin Wall fell, Germany was reunified and the Soviet Union collapsed – not to mention the Chernobyl disaster and the slashing of the USSR's stockpile of nuclear weapons. Herzog conducted a series of interviews with 87-year-old Gorbachev, still a consummate politician, over six months. These conversations are intercut with archival footage and interviews with key figures from the era. Herzog (Into the Abyss, Cave of Forgotten Dreams SFF 2011, Grizzly Man) demonstrates a genuine affection for his subject, underlining the poignancy with which they discuss Gorbachev's political reforms, his beloved wife Raisa, and his significant legacy.

One talking head worth listening to.
Stephen Farber, The Hollywood Reporter
It's ultimately because of Gorbachev's seeming unwillingness to fit the director's usual mold that 'Meeting Gorbachev' is able to become such a different and engaging bio-doc.
David Ehrlich, IndieWire
