Acclaimed Chadian filmmaker Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s Cannes Competition contender tells the story of a single mother whose world collapses when she discovers her teenage daughter is pregnant.
In N'Djamena, Chad, Amina lives with her 15-year-old daughter Maria and struggles to get by recycling old tyres into wire stoves. She attends the local mosque and one of the congregants proposes marriage to her, saying, "You need a man to protect you". But Amina desires love, not protection. When she discovers Maria's pregnancy and her wish to have an abortion, their lives become even more precarious in this conversative, religious community. Haroun has created some of the most profound, humane films to emerge from the African continent such as Abouna (SFF 2003), Dry Season (SFF 2007), A Screaming Man (2010) and Grigris (SFF 2013). With Lingui he delves into a desperate situation and emerges with an uplifting tale of independence and empowerment.
The world it shows us, etched in fully felt performances and beautifully hued compositions, feels vividly, sometimes overwhelmingly present.
Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times.
The sheer seriousness and urgency of the deceptively unhurried story give it power.
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
