Disaster and the threat of war punctuate this urgent film that tracks the lives of a dysfunctional couple in 2014 Ukraine, as their way of life collapses around them.
After a stray bomb destroys part of her house in Ukraine’s Donbas region, Irka, heavily pregnant and dealing with a belligerent and unsupportive husband, defiantly stands her ground as war begins to literally creep into her living room. When a passenger airline is shot down nearby shortly thereafter, and fellow villagers flee oncoming armed forces, Irka finds herself at a crossroads. Director Maryna Er Gorbach’s confronting and vital film, composed using multiple serene long takes, depicts eastern Ukraine in a state of precarious uncertainty, and serves as a sharp and timely reminder of the unfathomable toll war takes on ordinary people. 2022 Winner of the World Cinema Dramatic Competition for directing at Sundance and People's Choice Award runner-up in Berlinale Panorama.
