A documentary hit at Sundance: Filmmaker Sierra Urich digs into her family’s complex past, uncovering surprising and wonderful stories from her Iranian-born mother and grandmother.
Sierra grew up in rural Vermont and has never been to the homeland of her mother, Mitra, and grandmother, Behjat. She is determined to learn more about her heritage. With a little nudging and translating, Behjat tells of her pre-teen marriage and family traumas, while Mitra herself discloses her troubled teens during the Iranian Revolution. Sierra is inspired to travel to Iran, but her mother is set against it, given the regime’s current attitude towards women. Flitting between past and present Sierra unearths a rich and compelling history, undoubtedly paralleled by other migrant communities, as she strives to make sense of her identity.
