Instructions on Parting
Jenkins vividly documents a tumultuous year in her family, which sees the arrival of her first child, and the cancer diagnoses and deaths of three close members of her family. Through the filmmaker’s delicate touch, the commonplace becomes surprising and the unfolding narrative is unexpected: the dance of intimacy in families, the flow of seasons passing, moments lost and things left unsaid. Jenkins’ interrogation of her own loss leads us to a daring acceptance of the inevitable. It’s a beautiful, closely observed elegy to the cycles of life, indelible love between generations and the ways that senses are heightened at times of trauma.
