A tantalising mystery starring Lee Jeong-eun (Parasite, SFF 2019) as a filmmaker searching for missing footage from one of the first feature films directed by a South Korean woman.
A job that pays the rent becomes a magnificent obsession in the new film by leading South Korean female filmmaker Shin Su-won (Cannes prize-winner Circle Line). Jeong-eun is superb as Ji-wan, a middle-aged director of art house movies who’s in a professional rut and fed up with being treated like a servant by her lazy husband and selfish son. When asked to restore Hong Eun-won’s 1962 melodrama A Woman Judge, Ji-wan begins searching for the director and other women who played key roles in the almost-forgotten film’s creation. Shin’s captivating drama is infused with lovely touches of magic realism and pays joyous tribute to pioneering and contemporary female filmmakers.
A beautifully haunting cinematic mystery, Shin’s melancholy drama eventually allows its heroine to reclaim her love for cinema along with her self-confidence as a filmmaker,
Hayley Scanlon, Windows on Worlds
A surprising and heartfelt cinematic mystery about women filmmakers, the collaborative process of filmmaking, and the ghosts of those that came before.
Simon Bowie, Take One
Hommage is a love letter to film and the female filmmakers who continue to push to have their voices heard.
